Making friends through style

The other week was Fashion Week in my city. When I’m attending events with the potential to meet + mingle there’s one style principle I like to keep in mind: dress remarkably.

So I reached for this fire-engine red jacket, because it’s worthy of remarking upon.

It doesn’t need to be fire-engine red, or as noticeable as a coat, but when you’ll be meeting new people I encourage you to put on just one piece {a statement necklace, a full skirt, a bright lipstick, your favourite colour}something that you yourself would remark upon.

And then a kindred spirit, will walk right up to you and say “I love your outfit.”
At least, that’s what I do ;)
{Find out more about how this works at the bottom of the post.}

It’s not about wearing something crazy to get a certain kind of attention. It’s about dressing in a way that invites others who vibe with your style to start a conversation. Which will, of course, only work if you can find more to say to their compliment than “thank you.” (Which you totally can!)

I encourage you to be the compliment-giver even more often than you’re the receiver. Look for an outfit, a necklace, a lipstick colour, a pair of shoes you genuinely love and let them know. “Hi I don’t think we’ve met but I had to ask you where you got that amazing pair of shoes from?”

And this is basically my entire strategy for making friends as an adult.

So next time I encourage you to reach for the red instead of the brown, the bright lipstick instead of the subtle.

Do you have something remarkable in your closet—that sparked a compliment? A conversation? A friendship?

Post a picture + tag me in it over on Instagram! I’d love to see your style + continue the conversation over there! {@rebecca.jacobs}
