The Secret to achieving effortless chic style
I say it all the time: personal style is art + systems.
And the secret to the effortless part of style is in the systems.
I want you to believe these words:
Effortlessly chic style IS attainable for you. (All you need is someone to teach you the systems.)
In this post, I’m going to break down 3 ways you can achieve effortlessly chic style.
THE SECRET TO ACHIEVING effortless chic STYLE
First things first, let’s break down what effortlessly chic style looks like:
Effortlessly chic style looks like wearing the first outfit you tried on that morning AND feeling great in it all day.
It looks like picking out any piece, and knowing multiple options of what will look good with it (even if you haven’t worn them together yet—you just know.)
And the cole’s note of the secret to achieving it is this:
Spending time, money, and effort now, so you don’t have to spend it each week and each time you get dressed.
(It’s having clarity in your style and combining it with systems.)
It’s these systems I teach in my one-on-ones, but I’ve come up with 3 exercises you can do all on your own to help you develop your own effortlessly chic style.
Create an outfit lookbook in your own closet
Take a few hours—over a few days or all at once—and try to remix your closet in ways you don’t usually mix it. And, yes, you’ve got to try things on.
Every time you find a new outfit you like and feel great in, snap a mirror selfie and start adding them to an album on your phone.
Now you have a system: instead of staring blankly at your closet and starting from scratch each morning, you can flip through your lookbook and love the first outfit you try on that day.
Do the work now to eliminate all the pieces you don’t love from your closet
Come with me for a sec. You’re buying a car. They tell you:
“Here are all the parts of the engine that work really well and you’re going to use them each time you drive. There’s a bunch of other parts we left in there—some are a little broken and don’t work that well, and sometimes they get in the way of the parts of the engine that do work. And whenever you do use one of these parts, your car will drive much worse than if you were using the main parts of the engine. But more is better, right?”
You’d be going “HECK no. More isn’t better! Get rid of all the pieces that don’t do anything besides get in the way.”
Your closet, it works like an engine. We just rarely think about it like that.
If you get rid of these extra pieces, you feel more empowered every time you open your closet. If you get rid of these extra pieces, you give yourself a better chance at feeling your best EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Take care of your engine (or you know, your clothes)
Your clothes are a part of how you show up (a big part!) Give them the respect you deserve when you show up.
Respect them by washing them with care, getting them tailored for your body, using a lint roller, an iron, and a good ol’ pair of scissors and needles to get rid of loose threads and sew on missing buttons.
Keep their home sacred and organized. Make your closet a peaceful place where you know where to look for everything—nothing is rolled up in a ball and jammed in a drawer.
This system of organization and care will help strengthen and nurture your relationship with style (and P.S.: our relationship with style is an subset of our relationship to ourselves).
HOW COULD YOUR LIFE CHANGE IF STYLE CAME EFFORTLESSLY (and always on budget)?
IF YOU EMBODIED THE PERSON YOU WANTED TO BE every day?
IF YOU ALWAYS FELT CONFIDENT AND YOU ALWAYS showed up?
Effortlessly chic style is attainable for YOU.
These are just 3 systems you can create to help get there. But together, we can do so much more.
